Abridged History of Polk County, FL (Munn Park)
(2025)
cut into three parts, visually, and temporally, this video works to destabilize the image of polk county using the language of the systems that manufacture it. throughout the work, youtube thumbnails from realtors, 70’s tourism footage, and archival phosphate promotion videos are used as a surface to create new image, erasing the existing connotations of optimism, and coherence that polk county opts to project. accompanying each visual change is the click of a slide projector, making the process of selection, advancement, and projection auditory.

glitch functions as structure, rather than as an effect. footage of banana lake in florida decays, revealing my eyes watching, looking, from the trees. night time joy rides through downtown lakeland that initially read as continuous break apart, creating unstable routes with incompatible geography. more driving footage, this time in mulberry, gets crunched together with fire, making the landscape flicker to illuminate images of phosphate production. sound operates parallel to the image, with droning, ambient noise persisting across sections, changing tone without warning, and before you realize. chants, whispers, and product lists echo under the image, present but just out of comprehension.

these images and audios refuse to stabilize long enough to cohere into a single narrative of time and place. polk county never materializes. its histories, infrastructures, and desires never fully align. this instability is held into view, forcing attention to the systems, aesthetics, and decisions that produce a sense of place, and what lives, stories, and temporalities are intentionally left out of frame.
